Barking Owl

Most Australian farms have a couple of dogs for stock work or companionship.  This owl sleeps during the day and hunts at night - but it sounds like a farm dog.  Farm dogs often get blamed for the late night barking of the owl.

They are very quiet during the day - and only call at night - when they fly from their night rests to hunt for mice and rats in the fields and around farms.  Then they can become very noisy.

I love lying awake at night - and, after midnight, listening to owls calling.  I specially love the little owls that live close to my farm - the Boo book Owls that sing boo - book on and off for hours at a time.   It is a little harder to love the barking sounds of this much larger owl.
