Deep Space Objects: Galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere

This is a catalogue of the 15 brightest galaxies south of 0° Declination. Where i have imaged the galaxy, my best picture of the structure is included.



Large Magellanic Cloud: ESO56-115 (LMC)

Constellation: Dorado
B Magnitude: 0.9 Type: SBm F: B Distance: 0.16 million Light Years
Notes:  disrupted barred spiral galaxy first mentioned by Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi Shirazi, ("Azophi"), in his Book of Fixed Stars around 964 AD.  Mentioned in 1503–4 by Amerigo Vespucci in a letter about his third voyage and Ferdinand Magellan sighted the LMC on his voyage in 1519.
