Mallacoota is at the extreme South East tip of the Australian mainland. It has a superb inlet, although over time the sand bar at the heads has silted to less than 1.5m.
The inlet consists of lakes, wide connecting areas and one relatively narrow connector, all subject to different levels of tidal flow and changeable winds. There are sand bars in the lakes and along some shorelines.
Up stream from Mallacoota is Gipsy Point. I try to spend a couple of days each year watching the sea eagles fish along the inlet. In summer it is quiet and cool after the heat of the Southern Tablelands.
